Introducing our Vegan Grab-n-go Delight by Koko Kai Yogurt
In case you didn’t already know, Hawaii is not much of a manufacturing hub- this is why, as a state, we import roughly 98% of what we consume. Part of this is due to space, part is due to money, and part is due to a lack of individuals stepping up and doing it first. The last hurdle was a moot point in the story of Koko Kai Yogurt.
Jon and Aline are the owners of now state-wide distributed, locally made, coconut yogurt company Koko Kai!
Starting in the midst of the pandemic, this company began with a hot pot and a farmer’s market. However, in a very short amount of time they grew to operate a manufacturing facility and have reached distribution in most grocery stores on all islands, and even received placement in California’s elite food establishment- Erewhon Market.
They began this company after trying a thick, nutrient rich coconut yogurt on a van trip in New Zealand. Aline, already a chef, thought to herself “I can make this!” And that’s what she did!
They source all their flavors from the Hawaiian islands and offer four consistent flavors of Plain, Vanilla, Honey, and Passionfruit, plus add seasonal and temporary flavors such as Pumpkin, Coffee, and Chocolate.
We are happy to offer these delicious yogurts in the grab n go sections of Kailua and Waikiki. We also have a collection bin for their glass jars because Koko Kai sanitizes and reuses their jars to decrease their carbon footprint! Because they are care about their environmental impact, they decided to use glass jars, but at a premium price of $1 per jar. Therefore, for each jar returned, they are saving a dollar AND helping to decrease waste. As a thank you to returners and the Hawaiian community they support and love, Koko Kai donates $.50 per jar returned to a different local environmental nonprofit each month.
Come in and try their yogurt today, and don’t forget to bring your jar back next time- but toss the lid, that cannot be reused!
