When we set out to create the sandwich options on the Nalu menu, we knew that these would be some of our most filling menu items -- a great way to fuel up for a day of activity, without creating that heavy, sluggish feeling you get after some meals. We knew our sandwiches would need to represent the same values as the rest of our food -- vibrant, healthy, and fresh, and we kept that in mind as we crafted each signature item. Our sandwich lineup now features seven different sandwiches to put a smile on the faces of a variety of customers. And while we love our sandwiches all the same, one has proven to have captivated our diners a little more than the others -- the Nalu Ahi Tuna Sandwich.

We’re very honored that you love the Nalu Ahi Tuna Sandwich, so we thought we’d let you in on a few secrets as to why it’s so good:

The Ahi: We might as well start with the reason for the sandwich’s being -- beautiful Hawaiian ahi caught in Pacific waters, as fresh as it gets. We take that beautiful piece of fish and saute it with onions so that it’s just seared - fresh and pink and ready for a bite. The ahi can also be prepared closer to well done, if that’s to your liking.

The Bread: Once that beautiful fish is prepared, we give it the perfect place to rest - on a fluffy bed of La Brea Bakery ciabatta. While we think this bread, toasted to perfection with a slight crispiness, makes the perfect vehicle for the ahi, we also like to give customers plenty of options including gluten free, multigrain, or white bread, a croissant, or it can also be made into a wrap and served on a spinach tortilla.

The Veggies: A healthy, balanced diet includes plenty of colorful veggies, so we add some texture and nutrients to the ahi sandwich with high quality mixed greens and avocado, as well as locally-sourced tomato and sprouts.

The Finish: Like many favorite food items, the secret to this one is in the sauce. In our case it’s the homemade Nalu Sauce, a take on an Argentinian chimichurri aioli, a recipe from co-owner Justina’s family. And it just so happens to be both dairy- and gluten-free, so almost anyone can enjoy it! Add a finishing touch of Hawaiian balsamic vinegar at the end to accent the ahi and the vivacious herbs and oils from the Nalu Sauce, and you’ve got a sandwich to remember.
