They attributed the name to the gift from the gods the indigenous people of the time received to sustain them as they were nearing starvation.

From then on açaí became a staple for Amazonian people for thousands of years. It wasn’t until the 1970s that açaí pulp made its journey outside of the Amazon rainforest and into the major cities of Brazil. Then, in the 1980s, Brazilian Jui-Jitsu founder, Carlos Gracie popularized the açaí bowl as part of an athlete’s diet. This "Gracie Diet" featured açaí bowls as a key component, likely due to its perceived energy-boosting properties.

Surfing and fitness enthusiasts in Brazil soon caught on to the açaí bowl trend.
